Week 5

Here are some concert fliers produced by Club Sandwich, a "collective" that organizes all-ages live music events in the Bay Area. All of the images communicate the following information: location of the show, bands that are playing at the show, time and date of the show, and sometimes the price. These messages are communicated through words, (sometimes highly stylized) and are accompanied by pictures done by various artists. Although concert fliers can differ greatly from one another, they usually share the same type of information and are usually created with a common purpose in mind.

Week 4

I played some visual games with my roommates, Greg and Sean.
With Greg, I played "The Band Cross". The objective was to determine which color of "snake" was the shortest.

I followed the path of each color of snake from one end to the other, marking the pathway with a symbol (different for each color) every time the distance of a semicircle was covered. Amount of symbols is totaled to determine the length of each snake.

Greg looked at each circle individually. A number is written down for each circle, representing how many times a certain color of snake makes a quarter rotation around that circle. The numbers are totaled to determine the length of each snake.

With Sean, I played "Three Squares". The objective was to trace a path along the image without intersecting your lines.

I started at the bottom right corner, worked my way around the outside to the top left corner then attempted to keep my lines as close as possible to my previous lines by "zig-zagging", or crossing back and forth across the image.

Sean just started drawing lines, i don't think he ever successfully completed the puzzle.

Week 3 - Visual Searches/Feature Channels

I think this website is really cool!
http://newsmap.jp/

Newsmap is an application that visually reflects the constantly changing landscape of the Google News aggregator. It displays information using Feature Channels such as Color, Size and Spacial Layout. News stories are grouped together based on type of news such as, World, Nation, Business, etc. and each category is given a color. Headlines that are bigger are more important/have greater coverage, and the darkness of the square represents how old the article is. The website allows to you to customize the information displayed based on categories, country, etc. I find digital information design such as this to be very interesting and it certainly relates to my curriculum as a Design major.
